I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 5th instant, enclosing copy of a despatch from the Governor of Hong Kong regarding the progress of the new defence works of that Colony; and making enquiry as to the probable date of delivery of the new heavy guns.

In reply, I am to acquaint you, for the information of Colonel Stanley, that the Secretary of State hopes that the Smith Armament will be consigned to a greater part of the ordering during the current year.

The mounting of the Armstrong guns are of new pattern and require to be specially made, and this of course to some extent retards supply.
